Winter coats for small dogs: what to look for
Small dogs lose heat faster than big ones, and a wet British winter walk can leave them shivering. A good coat keeps them warm and dry, as long as it fits.
Does my dog need a coat?
Not every dog does. Small, short-coated, older, young or very slim dogs feel the cold most. If your dog shivers, hunches up or slows right down on cold walks, a coat will help. Thick-coated breeds often don’t need one at all.
What to look for
- Waterproof outer, warm lining. Fleece lining is warm and easy to wash.
- Chest and belly coverage. Little dogs are close to cold, wet ground, so the underside matters.
- A harness opening that lines up with your harness clip, so you’re not fiddling in the rain.
- Reflective trim for dark afternoons.
- Easy fastenings. Velcro or clips you can manage with cold fingers.
Getting the size right
Every brand sizes differently, so an XS in one is not an XS in another. Measure your dog first (here’s how) and compare with that brand’s own size chart. Back length and chest girth matter most for coats.

A quick fit check
Once it’s on, you should be able to slide two fingers under the neck and chest. Your dog should walk, sit and lie down without the coat pulling. If it rubs under the front legs, try the next size or a different shape.
