Winter coats for Yorkies, Chihuahuas and other tiny dogs (UK)
Tiny dogs feel the cold first, but they don’t all need the same coat. Here’s a quick, breed-by-breed guide to keeping little dogs warm and dry on UK winter walks.
Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkies have fine, silky hair with no thick undercoat, so they chill quickly in wind and rain. A fleece-lined waterproof coat with good chest coverage works well. Look for soft edges that won’t tangle long hair, and a harness hole so you’re not unclipping in the rain.
Chihuahuas
Chihuahuas are tiny, often slim and quick to shiver. Many owners like a snug jumper indoors on cold days and a padded, waterproof coat outside. Choose the smallest sizes (often XXS or XS) and check the neck isn’t too wide, as small necks slip out easily.
Jack Russells and other small terriers
Jack Russells are busy and active, so they usually need less warmth than toy breeds but appreciate a light waterproof on wet days. Pick something that doesn’t restrict the shoulders, and reflective trim for dark afternoons.
Dachshunds
Long backs and short legs make Dachshunds hard to fit. Look for coats made specifically for long-bodied dogs, with belly coverage, since they’re close to cold, wet ground. Always measure the back length.
Toy Poodles, Bichons and other fluffy small dogs
